Wire Dyeing Service

Overview

When base wire is only manufactured in one color—or factory minimums are too high—our wire dyeing service gives you production-ready custom colors in small runs. We color MTW, GPT, and many PVC-jacketed cables in the typical range of 30 AWG through 2 AWG, with consistent appearance and reliable turnaround.

Important: TFFN and THHN are not compatible with dyeing.

How Our Dyeing Works

Before-and-after comparison: base white PVC wire and the same wire after dyeing light blue
Before / After — white base wire dyed to a clean, even color.
Range of stocked dye colors on PVC wire: Black, Dark Blue, Dark Green, Brown, Tan, Yellow, Red, Pink, Orange, Light Green, Light Blue, and Purple
Range of Stocked Colors
Color Representation Notice: Colors shown here are a representation only. Actual colors may differ from those shown and can vary between batches of dye from the manufacturer. We do try to maintain a consistent color. Any questions, please contact a sales rep and we will gladly assist you.

Ideal for clear circuit ID, rework of mismatched color, or avoiding factory MOQs.

Compatible Constructions

  • MTW (Machine Tool Wire)
  • GPT (Automotive primary wire)
  • PVC-jacketed cables (many low-voltage, control, and multi-conductor builds)

Not Dyeable: TFFN, THHN (nylon overjacket and compound incompatibility).

Non-PVC compounds and high-temp insulations are case-by-case—send specs for review.

Standard Stocked Colors

  • Black
  • Dark Blue
  • Dark Green
  • Brown
  • Tan
  • Yellow
  • Red
  • Pink
  • Orange
  • Light Green
  • Light Blue
  • Purple

Provide a target color or sample for best match. Custom matching available on review.

Legend Retention & Printing

Use silver-oxide ink for legends/marking when dyeing is involved. Other inks may lose contrast or transfer during processing and post-processing. If maintaining existing print is critical, share the exact ink type and legend spec so we can advise or reprint after dye.

Standard Dyeing Capabilities

Parameter Typical
Size Range 30 AWG to 2 AWG (typical PVC builds)
Compatible Polymers PVC, many PVC-jacketed cables (others by review)
Finish Even, opaque color with clean transitions
Identification Full recolor for strong circuit ID; optional re-print (silver-oxide recommended)

Quality & Appearance

  • Consistent hue and coverage across the lot
  • Visual inspection and sample retention per lot
  • Color verification against approved sample (when provided)

Lead Times & MOQs

  • Small runs without factory color MOQs
  • Prototype to production quantities
  • Rush options reviewed on request

Combine with cut-to-length and packaging to shorten build time and reduce handling.

What to Include in Your RFQ

  • Base wire spec (MTW, GPT, or PVC-jacket cable), AWG/OD, total footage
  • Target color (choose stocked or provide a sample)
  • Legend/marking requirements and ink type (silver-oxide recommended)
  • Bulk vs. cut-to-length (include cut lengths if needed)
  • Preferred packaging (spools, coils, or customer-supplied)

FAQs

Can you dye TFFN or THHN?
No. TFFN and THHN are not compatible with dyeing due to the nylon overjacket/compound behavior.
Will dyeing affect electrical ratings?
No. Dyeing is a cosmetic/identification process and does not change conductor size, construction, or published electrical ratings.
How do I keep the print readable after dye?
Specify silver-oxide ink for legends/marking. Other inks may lose contrast or transfer. We can review re-print options after dye if needed.
What sizes can you dye?
Typical range is 30 AWG through 2 AWG for PVC-based builds. If you’re outside this range, contact us for a review.
